Does anyone have any knowledge or experience with either a GBC180 Renault or a Saviem SM8?

Currently seeking a brake accumulator for the GBC180 but also seeking workshop and operators manuals, parts diagrams / lists, any information on the two.

Cheers!

When the army tested 6x6 trucks in 1982 ,they had a 4x4 and a 6x6 .....they were sold along with all the other test vehicles in 1984 IIRC..(I may be wrong here ,I just know there were two French trucks)

Ah interesting.
Uk army or Aus army?
Did they then go with MAN or Merc or something?
I'll do some more reading...

I think the SM8 was a short run in the late 60s but i may be wrong.
The GBC180 ran for much longer, a bit later on i believe so it was probably them they trialled

The army tests are online ,somewhere .........Ive seen the Leyland results ........and the army ended up with 6x6 Macks ,which was the result they wanted all along............I dont know why truck makers wasted money on the trials ,International didnt ,they knew the decision was already made before the trial

The tender process for the new Army fleet was incompetent and rotten to the core.

Stewart and Stevenson, owned by British Aerospace, is the standard light truck for the US Army. Common sense would say that is the one to go for but unfortunately it came dead last in almost every test against 5 other manufacturers. Defence bean counters then promoted it to first place for the sole reason it was the cheapest. The Army Chief of Staff must have gone along with this weird decision. What is the point of spending millions on testing and stuffing around a number of the world's largest makers if the best does not count, and only criteria is cheapest?

Defence’s 2007 Source Evaluation Report initially ranked a proposal from Stewart and Stevenson last of five tenders on the basis of value-for-money, but elevated the proposal to the position of preferred tender because it was the most affordable—notwithstanding Defence’s assessment of significant vehicle deficiencies against its specific requirements, and the identification of many acquisition risks in the course of the tender process. 10

Anyhow, there was so much hue and cry about the whole process, they cancelled negotiations with Stewart and Stevenson and eventually came up with the MAN/ Rheinmetal fleet now in service. Below is the Auditor General's report on the whole sorry saga. Not only were they specific that the S&S trucks no good, and particularly last in value for money,  the contract was cancelled because of "probity" (corruption) issues. Who got canned for this - nobody!

Ah ok.
Im guessing there was something going on that the other manufacturers weren't aware of!
I'll look up the testing, sounds interesting!!

Thats more recent .......the 1982 tests that resulted in Mack for the 6x6 and Unimog for the 4x4 s ..............actually ,for the current vehicles ,the MAN is probably the best current all wheel drive made ....but I' dbet everything about them is horrendously costly........far as I know the army is so broke ,all the new vehicles are on leasxe ,so they have to be left white for resale...........I have a relation who says the units cant get fuel or ammo cause it costs too much.
